Blog 11 Non-computer tech use in the classroom

One non-computer tech use in the classroom that i think it is helpful and interesting is a switch. A switch is like a huge button that can do various tasks. A switch can be hooked up to a computer to be used instead of a keyboard. It also can be hooked up to educational toys and other toys. Switches are used for students with severe physical disabilities. It takes a lot of fine motor skills to use a keyboard and to write. Switches allow students who have trouble with fine motor skills to do the things that involve fine motor skills. A switch can easily be hooked up to a toy where a marker is attached to the toy and can allow a student to draw a picture. I think switches are still needed today because they are very helpful to students with physical disabilities. They allow student with physical disabilities to get tasks accomplished that other students are doing too.

Robyn,
I think the switch tool is a very powerful tool. Actually today, in my disabilities class we learned about switches and things that you can do with them and generally how they work. It is amazing how such inventions can be created, and it makes you wonder what other great things that are out there that we do not know about. Not only can switches help children with physical disabilities, but they can teach children different tools that are used by other children so they can too be aware of different kinds of assistive technology. Although assistive technology are great tools, they are sometimes hard to manage and hard to incorporate. How will you incorporate switches into your classroom for a child with a physical disability, while allowing them to achieve the same or similar goals as students without physical disabilities? Good luck the rest of the semester … we are almost done!!!

Robyn,
I think switches are amazing. Not only could they be useful for children with disabilities but I think any child could benefit from them. There are so many different uses for the switches that they can be incorporated into any aspect of a student's life. Great idea!

I agree that a switch ia a very important non-computer based technology. Switches are great, because they can be used in so many different ways. I agree that switches are very important for students with physical disabilities. Switches allow students to participate with their peers and be engaged in activities that they normally would not be able to be.
